Gil Fredrick

BAXTER, TN - Colonel Gilbert "Gil" H. Fredrick, Jr., a distinguished veteran and devoted family man, passed away at the age of 85 on April 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 14, 1939, in Houston, Texas, to the late Gilbert H. Fredrick, Sr. and Irma Lee Wilson Fredrick, Gil grew into a man of exceptional character and achievement.

A proud Texan, Gil's early days were filled with the rugged joys of horse riding and the excitement of the rodeo, embodying the spirit of the cowboy throughout his life. He was awarded a B.S. in Mathematics from Sam Houston State University and an MBA from Central Michigan University, where he honed the intelligence and leadership skills that would define his career.

Gil's 26 years of dedicated service in the U.S. Army Aviation, including valiant campaigns as an aviator in two tours of duty with the 5th Aviation Flight Detachment during the Vietnam War. This service earned him widespread respect and numerous honors, including the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal, and Master Army Aviator Badge. His commitment to his country was unwavering, culminating in his retirement as a Colonel in October 1988.

His military service included a stint as Professor of Military Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville from 1984 to 1987.

In 1999, Gil made the move to Baxter, TN, where he quickly became an integral part of the community. As a member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church, he served with devotion in the staff parish and greeted fellow worshippers with warmth and kindness as an usher for many years.

Gil's commitment to service extended beyond the church walls as he volunteered with the Cookeville Regional Medical Center Auxiliary in the Cancer Center, touching the lives of many through his generosity and compassion.

Gil's adventurous spirit and love for the outdoors never waned. He found solace in landscaping, joy in playing bridge with friends, and relaxation in fishing. His passion for travel took him to many new destinations, always seeking out the next adventure with the enthusiasm of a man who relished the journey of life.

Family was the cornerstone of Gil's existence. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sue Harlow Fredrick, his son Allen Wilson Fredrick, Sr. and daughter-in-law Carrie, of Baxter, TN and daughter Deborah Fredrick Yu and son-in-law Ky, of Cookeville, TN. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Allen Fredrick, Jr. and Ryan Fredrick, both of Nashville, TN, and Ella Yu, of Cookeville, TN. Gil's sisters, Carolyn Hodgins and her husband Rodney, and Sharon Fredrick, of Houston, TX, along with several nieces and nephews, will hold his memory dear.

Colonel Fredrick was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert H. Fredrick, Sr. and Irma Lee Wilson Fredrick, and brother, Gary Fredrick.

Gil's life was a testament to his intelligence, adventurous spirit, and deep faith. He approached every day with a commitment to living fully and making a positive impact on those around him.

A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, May 4th 12:00 pm at the Baxter chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Rob Wheeler will officiate. Interment will follow at Rodgers Cemetery.

His family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Baxter Chapel.
