A memorial service for Mrs. Wanda Gay Heard, 80 of Algood, will be at 2pm, Friday August 15 at Algood United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Smith officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 1 pm until service time at the church. Mrs. Heard died Wednesday morning, August 6, 2014, at Bethesda Health Care Center. She was born October 18, 1933 in Putnam County to the late William Hickey and Sibbie Lee Warren Heard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim Heard and Jessie Tillman Heard. Mrs. Heard was a member of Algood United Methodist Church and served as the organist for 65 years. She graduated from Algood High School in 1951 and earned her Bachelor's Degree in Education from Tennessee Tech in 1954. Mrs. Heard was retired as a Claims Adjudicator with the Tennessee Employment Security Office. She formerly served briefly as a school teacher at Algood High School and in California. She was an active member of Cookeville Senior Citizens and loved to travel. She also had a great love for dogs and spent her last years with her constant canine companion Isabella. She was a kind, charitable, and courageous woman and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Jeanie Cowan of Cookeville, Chuck and Karen Warren of Algood; brother, Edward Heard of Houston, TX; sister and brother-in-law, Arlene and Buster Greenwood of Milan, TN; two grandchildren, Derrick Cowan, and Alicia Mosley and her husband Zack; and several nieces and nephews.
