Derrill Ervin Kern, age 78 of Cookeville, passed away Sunday June 14, 2020 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Derrill was born November 2, 1941 in St. Louis, MO to the late Kenneth and Grace Kurtz Kern. He was a veteran of the US Navy. He retired from See’s Candies in Carson, CA as Sr. Project Manager with over 35 years of service. Derrill faithfully served as Head Usher at Granada Heights Friends Church in La Mirada, CA for 30 years. After moving to Cookeville, he attended Stevens Street Baptist Church and served with the Care Center Ministry. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynn Dwyer Kern, whom he married June 21, 1975; daughters, Kim Kern of Banning, CA, Kristen Wilson of Cypress, CA, and Amber (Brad) Courter of Saranac, MI; son, Rodger (Heidi) Ferris of Anaheim Hills, CA; sister, Kathleen (Doug) Burnett of Arlington, WA; brother, Kevin (Stephany) Kern of Tuolumne, CA; grandchildren, Jonathan (Lexy) Fay, Michael (Anna) Fay, Jack Ferris, Violet Ferris, Remey Martinez, Kogan Martinez, Ellie Martinez, Layne Wilson, Cameron Cook, and Kaden Courter; and 7 great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Dennis, Patrick, and Steven Kern. The family would like to thank the "Angels in scrubs" nurses and staff in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at Cookeville Regional Medical Center for their loving care during his time with them. Memorial services with military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday June 18 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. Carl Scarlett and Larry Intermill will officiate. Friends are invited to come by the funeral home to sign the guest book and pay their respects on Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Due to Covid-19 precautions, social distance measures will be observed.
