Memorial service for Barbara Dare Briggs, 76 of Cookeville, will be held at 3 pm Saturday, August 24 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church in Cookeville. Rev. Joe Weatherly will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Ms. Briggs died Tuesday morning, August 20, 2013 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born February 6, 1937 in St. Petersburg, FL to the late Lee W. and Mora A. Brewer Hayman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Angel Dell Colburn. Ms. Briggs was a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Florida, and Master's Degree in Mathematics at Auburn University. She completed her studies at the University of Houston and the University of Memphis. Ms. Briggs was an Associate Professor of Mathematics at Tennessee Tech University. She served in that capacity until her retirement in 1999. She was an avid tennis player, member of the local garden club, and supporter of Bryan Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Briggs is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Charles "Chuck" Briggs of Kennesaw, GA, Bob and Leslie Briggs of Laguna Beach, CA; two daughters and son-in-law, Mary Merlin of Reunion, Fl; Catherine and Steve Jones of Silver Point, TN; two sisters and brother-in-law, Mora Lee (John) Hoffman of Polkton NC and Marge Hitchhock of New Port Richey, FL; ten grandchildren, David, Allie, Lindsey, Brad Briggs; Katie Merlin, and Bobby, Addie, Will Briggs; Addison and Coral Jones. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Bryan Symphony Orchestra 123 W Broad St. or St Michael's Episcopal Church 640 N Washington Ave both in Cookeville, TN 38501
